The term cross training describes a technique which professional athletes frequently used.  It is designed to help them improve not only the way they perform in long distance events, but it also increases their enjoyment of their particular sport.  Using cross training is a fantastic way for we ourselves to lose weight as well.

Cross training has many benefits, beginning with being able to prevent injuries, namely because when we stick to a single type of exercise or method of training, we can receive what are known as overuse injuries.  These can be caused by a variety of different exercises and activities, especially running, weight training, swimming, and cycling.  For example, when a runner pulls a muscle in his or her leg, it is an overuse injury.  Not giving yourself enough time to recover between exercises and sessions, biomechanical irregularities, and imbalances in the muscles can all result in overuse injuries, but cross training can successfully address and combat them.  It does so in two ways: it helps us maintain our level of fitness, which allows continued weight loss even though we cannot currently do the physical exercise(s) to which we are accustomed; and it addresses and corrects the cause of the overuse injury.

Cross training also promotes greater overall fitness by promoting a wide range of different exercises.  This helps because, since different exercises cause stress in corresponding systems in and parts of our bodies, naturally we will experience less stress if we engage in a number of different activities.  That way, neither your cardiovascular system, your muscles, your individual limbs, et cetera, will experience an overabundance of stress, which thus lessens the risk of an overuse injury.

Active recovery is a way to deal with any areas which have experienced an overuse energy.  When you implement an active recovery work out, you are favoring the parts of your body that need the least amount of recovery from an injury or from overdoing a certain type of exercise.  That way, less stress is placed on the parts of the body which need the most recovery.

Cross training also promotes better flexibility, which is a good thing because in addition to losing weight, it is important to get fit as well.  Along with flexibility comes a better sense of balance, more agility, and much improved skill.

In conclusion, there are several things you can do to make sure you get the greatest advantage from cross training.  For starters, make sure to create an exercise plan that contains a good mix of cardiovascular activities – walking, jogging, bicycling, and so on – weight training, and stretching exercises.  Secondly, be sure to pick exercises, activities, and sports that you enjoy doing or that you have always wanted to do.  The third thing you need to do is make sure that your exercise plan implements rest days, to let you recovery and to promote balance in all facets of your life.  As well, remember that slow and steady wins the race, so start out gradually with every exercise you undertake.  Research every new exercise before you try it, and lastly and most importantly, make sure that it is fun for you!
